 "bringing people together"

Shake It Up!

If you think At Risk Youth means Street Kids doing drugs, you’re not
even close! Most are in homes and schools every day without a goal,
a dream to pursue, or encouragement and support to pursue it!

YouthQuake!

A Music Mentorship Program where At Risk Youth can learn to play an instrument, produce a video, a CD, or live music concert, hands-on with a talented, experienced, professional tutor/mentor and be inspired!

Rhythm & Roots
stages LIVE! shows featuring some of the most talented and knowledgeable performers and crew from all over the Northwest and beyond! These concerts would attract hundreds for the shows alone, but as many come to support a local community group or charity we will introduce to our audience, and whose issue or cause deserves this kind of recognition, and support.

Every show is a joint effort of our tutors and their "apprentices." Beyond actual production costs, proceeds
from the concerts will benefit this YouthQuake program, which pays talented and experienced crafts people and musicians to tutor these kids.

Rhythm & Roots encourages youth to participate in and share their talents and energy by our own example, giving exposure and visibility to our work, and the work of individuals and groups in the community at large. With our encouragement, these youth can participate in, and witness first hand, what is achievable.

Any goal makes you tenacious, more determined to achieve it, and it renews itself everyday! Once you learn first hand what it takes to succeed, you realize nothing you put your mind and heart  into is beyond your reach!

"The Oregon Arts Commission believes that these strong and inspiring arts programs will have a powerful and positive effect on young people's lives. A great deal of evidence shows us that the participation of youth at risk in these programs improves school performance, reduces anti-social behavior, and leads to positive creative activity for young people", noted Kathleen Davis of Medford, Vice Chair of the Arts Commission.

Great work with limited resources!

What can we do?

As dramatic as the numbers are, they only scratch the surface. Rhythm & Roots takes these issues seriously, and head on. We would hope all kids could be mentored, first and most importantly by their parents and family, but we know from experience that is just not happening often enough.  Parents and families often have limited resources.

Rhythm & Roots will also be establishing an Artists-In-Education outreach program to take our tutors into area schools, churches, senior, and community centers, to get up close and personal, educational and entertaining, unplugged. AIE will primarily be funded by grants, and is provided at no cost to the groups mentioned.

A local blues guitarist was asked who he would most like to sit in a room with alone. Without hesitating he said, "Eric Clapton!". Imagine a kid sitting in a room with you, getting the same rush you would with Eric Clapton. "Hmmm, never thought of it that way" he said. Now he does!

Win! Win! Win! Win!

Everyone involved gets a boost of wind in their sails and wants to share it
with others. The community groups win, the artists win, the at risk
youth win, and the community at large wins!
Together we make real progress!
